Nikon vs Pentax system comparison

A decade ago I had a hard choice to make when buying my first DSLR: which system should I choose? Somehow I have rather quickly narrowed it down to Pentax and Nikon. After much deliberation I have decided to go with Pentax. I still hold the opinion that was the correct decision. However, I have recently switched to Nikon, which I again consider a correct decision. Having this perspective, I will try to explain the difference between these two, for anyone who might be asking himself the same questions I have been.

I intend to keep this document alive, at least for the time that I still own my Pentax gear and keep building my Nikon arsenal.
